Genemarkers: Prescribe with Precision: Trailblazing a New Era of Personalized Medicine

As the demand for precision medicine grows, healthcare providers are paying attention to pharmacogenomic (PGx) testing. PGx testing identifies genetic variations affecting the structure and function of biological proteins associated with a medication’s absorption, distribution, and excretion (ADME). Changes in these proteins’ functions can affect whether specific drugs are safe and effective for an individual. Although PGx testing has existed for many years, the healthcare industry is in the early stages of adoption.

Genemarkers is at the forefront of this pivotal moment in the healthcare landscape.

As a pioneer in PGx testing, Genemarkers is a trusted partner for healthcare professionals interested in offering PGx testing services. Genemarkers’ PGx tests include drug-gene pairs with the highest levels of clinical validity and utility. Empowering providers to make informed decisions regarding medication selection and dosing, Genemarkers is improving patient outcomes and minimizing adverse drug events.

“Our goal is to improve a patient’s medication management through comprehensive, quality-driven genomics services,” says Dr. Anna Langerveld, founder, and CEO of Genemarkers. “Our approach has always been rooted in our company’s core values: quality, integrity, and compassion. We believe in PGx and believe if used properly, it can have a significant impact on the patients’ health and quality of life,” continues Langerveld.

Compliance is a key component of Genemarkers’ mission, which includes ensuring tests are performed based on medical necessity and clinical utility. As such, Genemarkers developed its testing panels based on guidelines developed by the Clinical Pharmacogenomics Implementation Consortium (CPIC), the Dutch Pharmacogenomics Working Group (DPWG), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The PGxMarkers Panel is a comprehensive test that provides guidance on over 80 of the most commonly prescribed medications, including those used to treat depression, anxiety, cardiology conditions and pain.

Early on, Genemarkers recognized pharmacists play a significant role in delivering value from PGx testing. Genemarkers partnered with Michigan-based company, Arivium, Inc. to develop a commercial Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to facilitate a seamless workflow between the laboratory, the prescribing provider and a consulting pharmacist. This system, ArLIMS, has been instrumental in facilitating partnerships with pharmacists who interact with patients on a daily basis.

Healthcare providers can initiate testing through Genemarkers’ online ordering system. The sample is collected via buccal swab and mailed to the laboratory for analysis. Test results are accessed via a secure electronic portal. Genemarkers’ test reports are easy to understand, yet comprehensive, containing annotations, references, and dosing guidance. Other features of the Genemarkers platform include the ability to perform a patient risk stratification to identify patients who may benefit the most from PGx testing and integration into electronic health records (EHRs).

Our goal is to improve a patient’s medication management through comprehensive, quality-driven genomics services

Just as medications do not adhere to a one-size fits all approach, Genemarkers understands that health care delivery is complex, and each system operates differently. Genemarkers’ approach is flexible, and the Company works to meet the unique needs of each of its health care partners. As part of the Company’s end-to-end service, the client services team interacts with healthcare providers and patients to facilitate a smooth workflow, ensuring transparent and compliant billing practices.

While the evidence for PGx in improving health care has been increasing over the years, patient testimonials really inspire the Genemarkers team. One patient described the test as a “life-changer” that assisted her provider in making medication changes that improved her health and quality of life.

When employed correctly, PGx testing can significantly impact a patient’s health and quality of life. Genemarkers is working to make this revolutionary solution a part of standard medical care.
